St. Louis Catholic School Library

St. Louis Catholic School opened in 1963, and in that brand new school was a tiny library, half the size of a classroom.  In the newness of that small space, amidst a few shelves of fresh-off-the-press books, a strawberry blonde six-year-old discovered Laura Ingalls Wilder for the very first time.  I was that six-year-old and perhaps the first person in the whole school to borrow a copy of Little House in the Big Woods. What magic the experience held for me!

The library at St. Louis Catholic School still has that magical ability, as any good library should have -- to transport young minds back in time or forward; to inform and enlighten; to inspire reflection and introspection. Our library, which was first a band hall and then a science lab, is no longer half the size of a classroom.  It now encompasses over 1300 square feet and houses no less than 12,000 books. Thoughtfully designed and tastefully decorated, it provides a comfortable space for class visits as well as independent study.  We use the Follett automated cataloging and checkout system, and we have 5 computers for student research.

We are continuously improving our service to the students by upgrading our existing collection (some of the original books from 1963 are still here!) and we welcome suggestions from our students for expanding our collection.

We host a Scholastic Book Fair each spring to raise money for improving our holdings, and we welcome volunteers to help with this event.
